A Beginner's Guide to Microblading: What is it and Should You Get it Done?

What Is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of permanent makeup focusing on creating well-defined eyebrows. This bespoke process warrants a high level of precision. The microblading physician uses a pen-like tool that has a sloped blade with little needles at the end.
During the microblading process, these needles carefully scratch the skin surface with expert, featherweight strokes. They implant a quality pigment below the epidermis layer, creating fine, natural-looking hair strokes.

Eyebrow microblading is indeed different from eyebrow tattooing. In the latter, an electrical gadget is used that reaches into the deep dermis layer of the skin. Microblading is done on the surface only and it doesn’t last forever.
Moreover, the hair strokes look finer and more natural in the microblading process since the physician uses a handheld needled device. During this process, you may hear a scratching noise instead of the buzz of a tattoo gun.
How Long Does It Take to Get Your Eyebrows Microbladed?
Contrary to popular belief, eyebrow microblading is a super quick process. You don’t have to be under the needle for 2-3 hours. It is just the numbing and the mapping process that requires you to wait for 45-50 minutes.
When Does the Microblading Color Fade?
The eyebrow color from microblading generally fades in 12-18 months. However, several factors come into play when determining how long the color will last. This includes your skin’s ability to hold the color and the way you look after it.
Microblading is not recommended for oily skin, as the natural oils can break down the crispness of the hair strokes and create a blurred effect. Those with normal to dry skin can go up to 18 months without getting a touch-up. Moreover, if you have light or fair-colored hair, you may feel the need to get a touch-up sooner than those with darker hair.
Either way, make sure you take proper care of your newly microbladed eyebrows as per the physician’s instructions to make them last for as long as possible. You should also consult with your microblading physician for a touch-up session after every 12 months or so.

The Microblading Process
A typical microblading process involves the following steps.
Step 1: Mapping the Eyebrows
First and foremost, a microblading physician cleans and prepares the eyebrow area. After that, the shaping process occurs, during which the physician uses different forms of measuring tools. Once the brows have been shaped to be symmetrical to the client’s facial structure, the physician hands the client a mirror to approve the shape before moving on to the next step.
Step 2: Numbing
This step may take up to 20 minutes. The physician may use a topical ointment to numb the eyebrow area. Meanwhile, they may discuss the color theory and different pigment options with the client, depending on the original color of their brows, their skin undertone, and their desired look.
Step 3: Needling
Once all the measurements have been taken, the needling process begins. The microblading physician implants the pigment into the skin gently with light, careful strokes. A superficial line is created in the skin with each stroke, where the pigment will absorb and settle.
In case you feel considerable pain or discomfort at this stage, the physician may add another layer of the numbing gel before continuing with the process. The anesthetic gel seeps through the broken skin and starts working in five minutes. Once the area is numb, the physician will make another pass or two, implanting more pigment and adding any last hair strokes to complete the microblading process.
A Touch-up Microblading Session
Your microblading physician may call you in after 4-6 weeks for a touch-up session. During the session, they will evaluate the condition of the microbladed eyebrows and make additional strokes where the skin has over healed or the pigment has not settled properly. This time, they may decide to use a darker pigment to yield the desired results.
Is It Possible to Undo the Process?
Yes. The pigments used for eyebrow microblading are intended to fade over time. If the results are undesirable, you can easily remove microbladed brows or lighten them with a saline solution.
That being said, you must know that microbladed eyebrows are 40% darker in the initial 7-10 days. You can rest assured that they will go back to your desired shade once completely healed. In case you aren’t impressed by the results after the brows are fully healed, you can always go back to your microblading physician to further enhance them or discuss the pigment lightening or removal process.
